Judge Awards $10M Settlement for Wrongful Death in 2001
A judge awarded $10 million dollars to the family of Michael Herrin for a wrongful death suit. Michael Herrin was killed in 2001 when his vehicle was struck by a farm truck that failed to stop at an intersection. The settlement is one of the largest for the Southern Illinois area.

Two Indiana Teens Killed in I-70 Crash
Two Indiana teenagers heading home from the Colts game and a West Virginia man were killed late Sunday afternoon in a crash on I-70 near the Hancock-Henry county line. The West Virginia man had been driving a pickup truck pulling an empty livestock trailer west on I-70 around 5:15 p.m. when he lost control of the truck and crossed the median. The small car the teens were traveling in broadsided the pickup when it crossed into the eastbound lanes; the car then was rear-ended by a semi.
Police believe the pickup driver, who was headed for Illinois, lost control of the truck because of the wind and road conditions. The empty livestock trailer may have been easily manipulated by the fierce winds. However, the at-fault driver should have known better as the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory because of wind gusts that blasted the area throughout the day.
The teens' car hit the truck at a 90-degree angle The car was then rear-ended by a semi, enclosing it between the two large vehicles.
The teens were trapped in the car for an hour and a half before rescue crews could extricate them. They were declared dead at the scene.
After the car hit the pickup, the truck rammed into a bridge abutment, and both the driver and his female passenger were thrown from the vehicle. The man died on the scene, and the woman was transported by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
